An Unexpected Mid-Life Journey

Gastric Bypass

October 13, 2006

I think it is really interesting that we are having Friday the 13th in October.   I have always experienced good luck on Friday the 13th, and today is not any different.  There was not one thing that stands out from today as lucky, but this was a very good week.

I started my LEARN  class on Tuesday evening.  I think that I am really going to get so much out of this class.  It is going to force me to look at some ugly truths about my eating habits and food choices.  Even though I am nervous about some of the truths I will discover.  I am looking forward to facing those truths and learning how to change the habits that have led me to a lifetime of weight struggle.

This was the first week of my new exercise plan.  I have to admit that there were a few times this week I wondered why I was excited for this to begin!  I was not able to do all of the exercise everyday this week.  It is much harder physically and mentally than I had expected.  I know that it will get easier each week.

  1. I too have recently started a program to better my life. I have been working out almost daily. My goal is to regain confidence in myself and be a healthier person. I know that I can do it. The process has not always been easy though. Like you, I find it mentally and physically challenging. Keep up the great work. I know you can do it.

  2. Are they recommending Pilates? I’ve used that type of exercise in the past because it’s easy on the joints. I can’t do a lot of walking or running without pain, but I’ve lost a number of pounds and inches following a DVD for 20 minutes a couple of times a week. http://www.winsorpilates.com

Now for the real truth. I’ve gained many pounds since I injured my ankle in August, and I haven’t started ANY program to lose weight. I moved up a size, and emptied the dresser of favorite clothes that no longer fit. How do you get started? They say it takes two weeks to start or break a habit. I must find some motivation somewhere. LV, you might be just the one to shame me into what I should be doing!

What is your progam like? Do you have to go to a workout room, or do you manage at home?

  3. I applaud your courage for taking on this change in lifestyle. It takes even greater courage to face “truths”. The physical and emotional self are intricately tied and it’s useless to take on one without taking on the other. Bravo!

  4. I’ve heard pilates can work wonders on the body, once you get into the routine. I bought a video and yoga mat several months ago but I still find myself not sticking to it. I hope you have better luck!
